How to Customize JubileeTV for Your Loved One
Not sure where to start? Use this step-by-step guide to configure the ideal setup.
Step 1: Decide if Passive Mode is Right for You
Passive ModesPassive Modes offer the simplest possible TV-watching experience by limiting access to certain JubileeTV features. Because they only support setups with a single source device, check your hardware first:
- Multiple Source Devices: Passive Modes are incompatible. Skip ahead to Step 2.
- Single Source Device: You meet the hardware requirement, but you still need to weigh the feature trade-offs. (Note: Two of the three Passive Modes require this single device to be a cable or satellite set-top box).
Review our Usage modes Comparison ChartUsage Modes Comparison Chart to understand exactly which features are restricted. Only if those limitations are the right fit should you configure a Passive Mode (see How To Set Usage Mode). Once set, no further settings changes are required! If a Passive Mode is too restrictive, move to Step 2.
Step 2: Verify Interactive Mode & Configure TV Interface Settings
If you moved on from Step 1, Interactive Mode is the right fit for your setup. Verify your system is set to Interactive Mode, or switch to it if needed (see How To Set Usage ModeHow To Set Usage Mode).
Next, open the JubileeTV App and navigate to TV Interface SettingsTV Interface Settings (see TV Interface SettingsAdjusting TV Interface Settings). Pay special attention to these high-impact options:
- Messaging: Toggles the messaging feature on or off for both your loved one's TV and all connected App Users.
- Make Outbound Calls: Determines if your loved one can initiate calls from the TV. Disabling this removes their ability to call you or other contacts directly through JubileeTV.
Step 3: Curate Favorites
To keep navigation simple, JubileeTV provides easy access to frequently watched content. For the best experience, work with your loved one to identify their go-to live TV channels and streaming apps, then set them up as Channel and App Favorites.
- Note: App Favorites are exclusive to Roku devices. They are not supported on other media streamers (such as Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick).
For step-by-step instructions, see How do I add/remove Favorites?
Step 4: Customize Remote Buttons
Navigate to Button CustomizationsButton Customizations in the app to fine-tune how the JubileeTV remote responds, preventing your loved on from getting lost in menus.
Important: Button customizations are applied on a per-device basis. If your setup includes multiple devices (such as a set-top box and a Roku), you must configure these settings for each device individually.
- Simplify the Guide: Configure the Guide button to display Favorites, selecting the most inclusive option for your specific setup.
- Favorites Behavior: If you have both a set-top box and a Roku (with favorites saved for both), select "Show Channel & App Favorites" for universal access. If you only use one device, select "Show Channel Favorites" or "Show App Favorites". (This setting can also be adjusted from FavoritesFavorites.)
- Guide Button Behavior: Determine if the source device's native guide remains accessible. If your loved one is comfortable with their set-top box, choose "Show 'Guide' on Overlay Menu". If native menus cause confusion, choose "Hide 'Guide' on Overlay Menu" so the button only displays JubileeTV Favorites.
- Restrict Channel Surfing (Set-Top Boxes Only): Set Channel Up/DownChannel Up/Down Behavior to cycle exclusively through favorited channels. (Non-favorited channels can still be accessed via channel numbers, and this setting can also be updated directly from the FavoritesFavorites.)
- Disable Unused Buttons: Turn off any remote buttons that aren't needed to limit access to unfamiliar menus.
- Admin Tip: Disabling a button on the physical remote only restricts it for the TV user. Admins can always access the original button commands remotely via TelescopeTelescope in the JubileeTV App by selecting All Controls.
Step 5: Apply a Physical Remote Cover
For the simplest interface, pair your software customizations with a physical remote cover to completely hide unused buttons from view.
- Hybrid CoverHybrid Cover: Best for setups that include both a set-top box and a streaming device.
- Streamer CoverStreamer Cover: Best if you exclusively use a streaming device.
