Managing Screen Reader Settings
Overview
A screen reader is an assistive technology feature that reads on-screen text, menus, buttons, and other elements out loud.
JubileeTV does not have a screen reader feature. If a voice is reading the screen out loud, the audio is coming from a connected source device, such as a cable or satellite set-top box, or a media player like Roku.
Whether you want to enable or disable the screen reader, you must adjust the accessibility settings directly on your specific source device.
How to Toggle the Screen Reader
Because JubileeTV displays the video and audio directly from your connected source devices, the screen reader must be managed within that specific device's menus. You can usually find the toggle inside an Accessibility menu, which will be located somewhere within the device's Settings.
On Roku
If your connected source device is a Roku, you can turn the screen reader on or off using any of the three methods below.
Method 1: Using the Remote Shortcut (Fastest)
- Ensure Roku is the active source. (If it isn't, press the J button on your JubileeTV remote and select Roku).
- Quickly press the -/* button on the JubileeTV remote four times.
- Alternative: If you are using the original Roku remote, press the * (asterisk) button four times instead.
- You will see an on-screen notification confirming the screen reader was turned on or off. To reverse this change, simply press the button four times again.
Method 2: Through Roku Settings
- Ensure Roku is the active source. (If it isn't, press the J button on your JubileeTV remote and select Roku).
- Open the Roku Home Screen:
- Using the JubileeTV remote: Press Guide or Menu.
- Using the original Roku remote: Press Home.
- Select Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Screen Reader (or Audio Guide) and toggle the setting On or Off based on your preference.
Method 3: Through the Telescope App
- Select Telescope from the App home screen.
- Ensure Roku is the active source. (If it isn't, press the J and select Roku).
- Press the Guide button to navigate to the Roku Home Screen.
- Select Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Screen Reader (or Audio Guide) and toggle the setting to Off.
On Other Source Devices
- Ensure the source device you want to adjust is the active source. (If it isn't, press the J button on your JubileeTV remote and select it).
- Open that source device's Settings menu.
- Look for an Accessibility (or sometimes System) menu.
- Find the screen reader feature and toggle it On or Off based on your preference.
Note: Different manufacturers use their own names for screen reader technology. If you don't see "Screen Reader," look for these common terms based on your connected device:
- Apple TV: VoiceOver
- Amazon Fire TV (Stick or Cube): VoiceView
- Chromecast / Android TV / Nvidia Shield: TalkBack
- DirecTV: TalkBack or Talking Guide
- Xfinity / Cox / Spectrum / Optimum: Voice Guidance or Talking Guide
- TiVo / Mediacom Xtream: Screen Reader or Audio Guidance
- DISH Network: Text-to-Speech
- Older Roku Models: Audio Guide
